Cycling after my transplants sped up my recovery and helped me come to terms with everything

55-year-old Sven shares his story of resilience after receiving not one, but two liver transplants. Twenty-five years ago, he was diagnosed with a progressive liver disease for which there was no effective treatment. For many years his condition remained stable, but four years ago his health deteriorated rapidly and his doctors informed him that a liver transplant had become unavoidable.
The news was a profound emotional moment. Having spent years fighting the disease and trying not to let it define his life, the realization that transplantation was now his only option hit hard. After receiving his first donor liver, complications arose when the connection to the new liver ruptured less than a year later, causing severe damage and leading to a second, life-saving transplant. The recovery was challenging, and there were moments when he had almost no energy left. Yet, against the odds, he gradually regained his strength.
Cycling played a crucial role in his recovery. Returning to the bike helped him rebuild his fitness, clear his mind, and process everything he had been through. The sport not only improved his physical condition but also helped him regain confidence in everyday life and return to work.
Today, he is a proud participant in the European Transplant Games. Through the cycling community he found a group of like-minded people focused not on illness, but on health, activity, and what is possible after transplantation. For him, the Games are a powerful reminder that transplant recipients can lead active and fulfilling lives. Representing the Netherlands in an orange jersey is both a personal achievement and a celebration of the second chance he was given through organ donation.
